Working on the Water

Being a teacher in Ocean City, NJ definitely has its perks. I get to teach in the only school in the entire US that is located right on the beach. Not only that but when summers come along there are a multitude of jobs on the island available to earn a little extra cash. I used to work at a garden store since I was a teenager and had a bunch of other miscellaneous summer jobs through out the years. It wasn’t until last year when a friend introduced me to working on the water or as you know I was a big surfer and have seen paddle boards out in the water but never tried it but figured it could be a lot of fun. When I did my first lesson out on the water I fell in love immediately and I knew I found my summer job for the foreseeable future. I don’t even consider my job work. I get to do what people pay to do everyday for free! Not many people can say that about their job. My favorite part of the job is getting to meet so many incredible people. If I am giving a lesson or giving a tour you get to meet people from …

The Dog Daze of Summer

Four years ago I tried stand up paddleboarding for the first time with my Mom, I immediately fell in love with it. Growing up at the beach and partaking in all of the fun water sports, paddleboarding seemed so natural. A few weeks later, my Mom and I purchased our first paddleboard, a 10’6” Yolo eclipse. The turtle design with the ocean blue rails and wood teak finish seemed to be too perfect to not buy. Later that summer, I got my world paddle association certification (WPA) to teach paddleboarding and the next summer I started working at OC Paddleboard. For quite a few years, I had wanted a dog. My Mom always said no, so of course when Mom says no, but who wants to listen to her. So, last May I went and bought a 10-week old yellow Labrador retriever and surprised my Mom. Of course at first she was in total shock, she actually screamed out of fright when she walked in the front door because she didn’t know what it was. But immediately she fell in love with his big brown eyes and floppy ears… who wouldn’t? I finally decided on the name Kona after the …

Why the Water is My Studio

by Kimberly Notarianni The sport of Stand Up Paddling (SUP) has really taken off.  It seems everyone these days is enjoying, or would like to experience, the feeling of  “walking on water.”  SUP is all the rage, and for good reason.  It is an amazing cross-training sport, as it is low impact on all joints and is also being used to improve balance and core strength for people recovering from serious injuries.  I have also witnessed this sport transform people’s lives overnight, by instilling a newfound level of confidence and achievement, making them feel invincible.  So true! For me, being a yoga teacher first and foremost, as soon as I got on a paddleboard six years ago, I was inspired to start playing with yoga postures while floating on the water.  The deck of the board was the perfect non-slip yoga mat, just begging to be explored!  Downward Facing Dog, Plank, Chaturanga, Up Dog, ah… and the upside down view as I dropped my head into Downward Dog was magical.  More and more that first summer on my board, I was inspired to try lots of different poses, including headstand and wheel, and other more challenging balancing postures.   Adding a …

8 Reasons I Love Stand Up Paddleboarding

How can one only describe and narrow down how much they love Stand Up Paddleboarding in only 8 reasons?!?  Now that is a challenge. I only dove into SUP in the Summer of 2014 after learning how to paddle in the ocean a couple of years ago. My heart always kept saying to try it again so when I did in the Spring of 2014, I knew I had to purchase a board. And that is when life changed for the better!  I have to thank OC Paddleboard for all of their support and introducing me to a great community of paddlers.  So the top 8 reasons I love to paddle are (drum roll please)…. There is no greater feeling than being on your board listening to the waves lapping against the rails.  I joke that I’m on my own private boat many afternoons. Really that is the feeling you get without the engine noise and knowing that you are being productive and healthy by paddling.  You also get to explore nature and elements you would miss if you were on a boat. I’ve paddled within feet of dolphins in the ocean off 45th street beach in Ocean City.  I’ve …
